I recently bought the book, Joseph Smith and Herbal Medicine. This is a wonderful book. It has so many great stories and it really opened our eyes. I mentioned this to Carla and we then had a great talk about herbs (when she was still raising kids she studied them in depth and her knowledge is broad on the subject). She then let me borrow a few books to read. The first that I read and she said was the best one to read is: Herbal Home Health Care by Dr. John Christopher. It is AMAZING. I couldn't put it down. He gets right to the point. He is LDS, and wrote a book which I hope to own soon: Just What is The Word of Wisdom.
So, we're changing our diets. And by diet, I don't mean we're doing this for a few weeks to lose some weight. (Although, if you are overweight/underweight and eat this way, your body will naturally gain/lose weight to where you "should" be.) I mean we are changing our eating habits, and hopefully for good. It is kind of a slow process and I have never bought so many vegetables in my life. The premise of eating this way is to stop eating all of the mucus forming foods (dairy, sugar, flour, etc) and start eating a lot more rawish veggies and fruits as well as beans, rice, etc. You can eat meat, no red meat (which we love) and only about once a week.
The first things we are cutting out are dairy and sugar. We are, however, still going to have Sunday be our "Blah Food" day, as we call it. I don't like to cook on Sunday's so we usually have a frozen pizza or any other crap we can find in the house. Yes, we eat crap on Sunday. Also, when we go out to eat, those will be the other times when we "splurge." But, while at home, we'll be eating this way. (Don't worry, we're taking calcium supplements, which I realized after reading this book, we weren't even getting enough calcium anyway and with the things we are going to eat, we'll be getting more than we were consuming.)
Before eating this way, you are supposed to do a three day cleanse. Jordan has been doing it. I lasted a day. Hopefully the next time I'll last longer. He is so tough! Through the cleanse you clean your body of about 3 gallons of toxic mucus and replace that with about 3 gallons of juice. Sounds gross right? It is.
Here was what I made for dinner last night (First night eating right):
New potatoes stuffed with artichoke topped with parsley, lemon and garlic.
It ended up being very satisfying and I wasn't hungry all night.
At least until Jordan decided to make salsa. No one can ever be too full for salsa. It was the first time he'd made it and it was the best salsa of my life. No joke.
Nice to hear you're eating right. My eating habits are just fine. Just so you're aware. :)
