...in our kitchen.
This week we finished up learning about the earth by learning about 3 different countries, Guatemala, France and Egypt.
Guatemala was fun because that's where Jordan served his mission and Cedrik loves talking about that. Jordan made Guatemalan eggs, which is scrambled eggs with tomatoes and spices. The boys like eggs so it was an extra treat to get them. I also made atol, which in Guatemala is like a rice milk drink, it came out more like rice pudding, but was still fantastic (surprisingly!). Those are the only two things to eat in Guatemala that Jordan liked so that's why we made them. We read My Pig Amarillo, and Mama and Papa Have a Store, which are both about Guatemalan children. We also had two reference books (books that have real pictures and descriptions). He learned some colors in Spanish too.
The France reference books didn't make it on time, even though they were put on hold early, so we read The Secret Circus and A Giraffe Goes to Paris. We built an Eiffel Tower out of wafer cookies and homemade frosting...it didn't stand long, but was cool. He also got to watch the light show of the tower and color/glitter one of his own. We had to go to the Co-op this week, so we even bought almond chocolate croissants, which they loved. He learned how to say hello, goodbye and thank you in French.
Egypt was probably the biggest hit. He learned about pyramids, we made one out of paper and learned about the tombs and mummys. We read Skippy John Jones in Mummy Trouble and he searched for his own mummy treat wearing his head lamp. We wrapped up his (girl) dog, Brutus, like a mummy too.
They also made some Halloween decorations.
