Dinosaurs were a huge success. I don't know why I doubted whether or not two boys would like learning about them. We studied their skeletons and compared how ours are similar. They colored their own dinosaurs too.
We made bones and the next day they were able to dig for them in some "sand" I made that was awesome. It was flour and mineral oil mixed. Surprisingly not oily at all and held together like perfectly wet sand at the beach. They loved pretending to be paleontologists and using their teamwork skills we've been trying to cultivate in the last year. Just like paleontologists they had to figure out which bone went in which spot (although ours were just by size). Then of course the sand play developed into adding a monster truck and a cow. They played for a long time. I do wish it could have been on the ground, but Eloise would have been way too much to handle with that scenario.
We read Harry and The Bucketful of Dinosaurs and although I didn't put them in a bucket, we did play with a bucketful. They pretended to hatch and obviously roared a lot.
We actually read quite a few research books-the boys loved the pictures and dinosaur facts. They love seeing school buses and trying to remember the names of the dinosaurs that are bigger than them. We also read Curious George's Dinosaur Discovery, How Do Dinosaurs Eat Their Food, and If I had a Raptor.
We finished the week with The Land Before Time-no dinosaur week would be complete without it.
Freddie's temple he made with the leftover clay.
I need to get back to doing more hands on activities. Thank you for the inspiration.
