It looks a lot more fun in these pictures than it actually was. Hopefully next year they're more into it.

First week of school
This was our review week. We did a short review of the planets and earth, including continents and ocean names. Cedrik knows their names well but has forgotten a couple of their placements in the map.
Freddie did awesome (understatement!) matching colors. I can safely say that I don't think he's color blind anymore. :)
We counted some rocks and also organized them into which shape they most looked like. Cedrik decided that tracing their outline would help a lot, and it did. He traced the rocks he had a harder time sorting and he finished easily.
We learned a tiny bit about Brigham Young (2nd latter-day prophet).
We did some writing, and letter learning for Freddie (phonics of m, a, c, t). Cedrik had a letter "r" sheet and decided to do almost the whole thing-without prompting from me! I asked him which one he felt was the best he wrote, and he circled all of them.
We also started our month with a new artist and musician. Marco Dall'aquila is our musician from the 1400s, a lutist. It is a very different sound than the piano, obviously, and I can't tell yet if the boys like it. We are studying Michelangelo as our artist. This week we started with painting upside down (as it turns out Michelangelo painted the Sistine Chapel standing up, not lying down). We studied The Creation of Adam. Jordan thought I should have chosen something else because Adam is nude in the painting; I don't see a reason to hide it. The boys actually didn't seem to notice, or if they did it didn't matter to them. They were much more interested in Michelangelo's version of Heavenly Father. This also allowed us to read a few verses from Genesis to see where he received the inspiration for this fresco.
Cedrik had a major meltdown when he realized they were painting under the table, flat on their backs. Eventually, he decided to just try "one time" and ended up loving it and using all the paint in his bowl. They didn't paint anything specific, just free style. :)

Spirit of Boise 2014
We woke up early to watch the hot air balloons "float up in the sky." We were also able to see the sunrise, which I have been wanting to do for awhile. We were able to talk about how the earth rotates and how the sun appears to rise. When the sun finally peaked up over the hills Freddie announced, "morning is here!" l.o.v.e.
Jordan made up a song about hot air balloons a year ago that he has sung almost every night since then to the boys. They love it.
After, we had bagels and apple juice for breakfast. I love this time of year. Autumn is almost here!
Spanish breakfast
We've ended our study of Picasso, for now, but I had forgotten that I wanted to make a Spanish breakfast.
I learned that churros are a common breakfast in Spain. Awesome. I fried them in coconut oil and Cedrik probably ate half of them. I was Maria (Picasso's mother) for the morning. We also had to complete the breakfast with tea in tea cups and Gershwin serenading us. It was lovely.
